Trekking routes in Sikkim





 Sikkim’s rigges and undulating topography is a trekker’s paradise. With its endelsss mountains, flora and fauna, Sikkim offers a retreat that is more like a voyage of adventure and discovery. The trekking trail in Sikkim runs through dense forest with an undulating climbs and some time it is very sharp. Some time trekkers require treading on soft snow. 3500 meters above trails begins to run through Rhodendron and Juniper bushes with ample opportunity to view snow clad peaks. Mountain lures, excitement over power senses and the chances of mishap is higher.




Mount Kangchenjunga - at 8598-m the third highest mountain on earth straddling Nepal and Sikkim - is the focal point of Sikkim and its people and their culture. It is not just a mountain, but the Sikkimese protective deity. The Sikkimese believes that it is not meant to be climbed, but only worshipped, as it is the abode of "The Five Treasures of the Great Snow". In deference to local sentiments, no expedition has set foot on its main summit peak - but remained a few meters below.
 The trekking trip will take us through lush verdant forests, rhododendron-covered hillsides, tiny yak-herders' summer settlements on high meadows, remote monasteries tended by Tibetan lamas, and high viewpoints with magnificent views of white jagged glacial peaks.

1.Yuksam-Dzongri Trekking Trails (5 days) (leave space for the trekking map)
The word yuksum means” meeting place of three lamas” referring to tri of three holy men who crowned the first Chogyal(King) of Sikkim. This popular trek in Sikkim, is from Yuksam to Dzongri and has superb views of Kanchenjanga. From Yuksam, the trail follows the Rathong Valley to Bakkhim and from here a steep ascent to the village of Tsokha. Above Tsokha the trail reaches Phedang. A further stage brings you to Dzongri (4020  M).Dzongri is situated at an altitude of about 4020 M, in west Sikkim. It offers the trekker a most fascinating close-up view of Kanchenjanga and Mt. Pandim. To the west rises the long outline of the Kyangla ridge. Dzongri is trekker’s paradise.

Goecha La is situated at an altitude of about 4940 M. Goecha La offers a mindcatching sight of the mountains like Pandim, Kanchenjanga and the others. The trek to Goecha la really is getting out & getting trekked. There are only few trekking routes around the Kanchenjanga National Park that are open to visitors. The trek is traditional which follows a picturesque route past lush vegetation and wonderful mountain views until it reaches a high pass. Trek from Yuksom to Samiti Lake, one of the high altitude fresh water lakes. From this lake, one can climb up to the Goecha La pass, and view the majestic splendors of Mount Kanchendzonga, Mount Kabru and Kabru Dome. Yambong – Singalila Trek 15 days trekking trails
The Yambong Singalila range is one of the rare spots on earth where the view embraces five summits rising above 7000m, amongst them Everest, Makalu and Lhotse of Nepal, Mt. Khangchendzonga, Mt. sinolchu in Sikkim. You will trek on the narrow paths adjacent to Indo-Nepali border, sometimes at the edge of the jungle, sometimes through rhododendron forests. The visit to some of famous lakes will give a blend touch of both nature and culture which make the journey a rare venture. As the name depicts" Yambong Singalila is the main mountain that connects the sikkim Himalaya range to Darjeeling hills and Nepal and eventually separates them. Yambong Singalila range is one of the many ranges to provides shelter to many endangered wild animals. It officially falls under Khangchendzonga Biosphere Reserve and shares a very close boundary with Khangchendzonga National Park at Gomothang. Here globally endangered animals like Red Panda, Himalayan Tahr, Blue Sheep, Himalayan Black Bear and spectacular pheasants like Satyr Tragopan, Himalayan Monal and Blood Pheasant flourish and roam. It is also recorded to have witnessed highest population of Himalayan Griffon Vulture roaming in Sikkim. Its elevation ranging from 1800 to 8583 meters above mean sea level consisting of lower hill, middle and higher hills, alpine zones and snow bound land.
This valley almost has everything which a tourist can dream of as a land of fairs and festivals, snow-clad mountains, holy lakes and peaks, holy caves, pilgrims spot, living local culture, pleasant valley flora and fauna and amazingly a century old stonewalls decorated with Buddhist script can still be seen at Golaghar Yambong and so on.

Hilley to Uttarey (West Sikkim)

The Hilley - Varsey hike is a no sweat trek which can be completed within a day or two. Varsey is called the valley of rhododendrons – they are available in all shades and shapes here. The Hilley - Varsey trail is ablaze with a riot of colors during March and April created by many species of rhododendrons blooming across the valley. The Rhododendron Sanctuary at Hilley Varsey is spread across an area of 104 sq. km along the Singalila Ridge which forms the natural boundary between India and Nepal. The dense forest of Varsey is covered with hemlocks, silver firs, magnolia and rhododendron trees and bushes.
Hilley - Varsey is also associated with Joseph Dalton Hooker, the man who thoroughly documented the flora and fauna of this region, and published the book called the “Rhododendrons of Sikkim” in 1849 – his work is still followed as an authentic text on this subject. Even the golden yellow rhododendron, scientifically called the Dendobrium hookeriana, is named after him

Singshore Bridge - Uttarey
Lying about 25 Km from Pemayangtse it is the highest bridge in Sikkim .  20-minute drive away is Uttarey, a base camp for adventure trail to the Singalila range.
